The following are some of the outstanding organizations that have received funding through the Foundation for Purposeful Living:
Humane Society of Scott County Indiana

The Scott County Humane Society was organized in 1901and incorporated in 1902 with the pledge, “Love, Mercy and Justice to Every Living Creature. I will try to be kind to all living creatures and protect them from cruel usage.” The founders championed the rights of horses as they were the primary means of transportation at the time and even purchased a “drink-fountain” so that teams of horses and other animals would have access to fresh water within the central business district. Today, as described by a volunteer veterinarian, “the effort is not just about saving dogs [and other animals]. It’s far bigger than that. The dogs change lives because they got a chance to live. They compel us to have more compassion, more empathy and more determination to make this world a better place.
The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem

The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem is an interfaith ministry that supports and promotes successful aging through educational, service, support, and volunteer opportunities for older adults. The belief that older adults are valuable members of society serves as the basis of the organization’s goals, which include:
- Supporting adults who wish to live independently in the community
- Providing opportunities for older adults to use their experience, skill, values, and gifts
- Enhancing life satisfaction through life-long learning, caring, relationships, creative expression, and community service
- Encouraging interfaith collaboration and community action through work with older adult ministries
- Developing new programs and services that enhance the aging experience for both active and homebound older adults
ASCEND: Aviation Summer Camp—Exploring New Dimensions
|
The ASCEND program is a week-long summer day camp that immerses youth ages 14 – 17 in all aspects of aviation, from hobby to career. |
Many students from previous years' camps have already earned their student pilot certificate, have become full-fledged pilots, or have begun study in aviation-related careers. The program has been developed and is run by the volunteers of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1083 in Salisbury, NC.
Civil Air Patrol

As the auxiliary of the United States Air Force, the Civil Air Patrol, through the work of approximately 60,000 volunteers, fulfills its Congressional charter by offering cadet programs, aerospace education, and emergency services to provide for the greater good of communities throughout the country. The Sugar Valley squadron, which was chartered in May, 2013, has quickly grown. The cadet program expanded to create a Color Guard, the formation of which was funded by the Foundation and which has subsequently served surrounding communities at important functions. See an article written by a cadet who describes the honor she and fellow cadets experienced as they offered this service on Memorial Day.
Heroes Helping Heroes Communities
Heroes Helping Heroes, Inc., is a non-profit organization with two distinct concentrations: Heroes Helping Heroes Global and Heroes Helping Heroes Communities. The global division focuses on international issues, while the communities division focuses on local needs.
Heroes Helping Heroes Communities (HHHC) was founded due to an overwhelming calling felt by a core group of adults and youth to mobilize and empower the local community to foster, adopt, and mentor “at-risk” and vulnerable children. To date, this passion has led to holding annual week-long summer day camps and monthly mentoring programs that are free of charge to participants or their caregivers. Both of these efforts have specifically focused on “vulnerable” children primarily in Stokes, Surry, Forsyth and Yadkin Counties in North Carolina. The objective of these programs is to surround these children and their biological or surrogate families with a community support network founded in hope, faith, and love.
HHHC volunteer staff is comprised of both youth (completed 9th grade and above) and adult leaders. There is a major emphasis on allowing youth to serve as positive and relatable role models. Consequently, these programs have proven to be a rich training ground for rising youth leaders.
